Captions

What do you feel?

“ What do I feel when I look at it?” This is a question I ask myself every time I do captions.

I try to feel—feel not think, what a photo is about.

A caption isn’t just a brief explanation of a photo (as defined by google) .

It’s a story…

Sometimes it tells the obvious, for those who turn a blind eye

and relays the hidden message, for the blind.

I get questions from friends  like “ Hey! What should I put here (photo) as a caption?”

“Is this one okay?”

“What do you think of this?”

These kind of stuff.

This is where I start to feel.

I believe that a good photo deserves a caption that portrays the emotions it has and it’s always a pity to see a shot paired with words that don’t give it justice.

I wanted to share how I do mine so here I am but since I’m not that great of an elucidator, below are several shots I got online… let’s see what we can do about them.

Before we start, I challenge you to feel the emotions each photo gives off and put those into words. I hope you can share them with me as well.

Let’s get it on! ^^

One

horse
He said it was okay to fall.

He said it was okay to fall.

As typical ones would go, the caption would likely be about a father-son relationship or that of journeys since a horse symbolizes one.

Think outside the box.

What might they be doing?

What could the father be thinking?

Is he even a father?

What face might the child be making? Is he excited?

Where could this be?

Who took this photo?

Also, put the colors into account… why black and white? Perhaps a memory?

Try to incorporate everything, even your own emotions, your current mood and even recent events. It doesnt have to be long. Sometimes it only even takes a word.

Two

road
It is a rough road that leads to the heights of greatness.                            -Lucius Annaeus Seneca

or when you come across a quote, you’ve seen somewhere or read in a book that meant something, you can always toss it in.

Three

pop
Cause sometimes, we do things that destroy our own happiness.

Four

bars
Enough

Enough of what?

Of feeling inferior… break free.

Of feeling caged.

Make a stand.

You deserve more than what little space you’re in today.

Go out.

These are what it called to me. What did it tell you?

Five

And just until when shall I take cover?

To be a kid again… to be happy and not be mindful of this cruel, cruel world.

Finally, I see.

And there you go!
They might be a bit dramatic but yeah…

Writing has been a refuge for me, this has been a way to vent out emotions I don’t get much chance to share and I hope someone would also find this as a way to get it all out. Not all can write essays or construct poems or make stories but captions…they’re short but meaningful.

Thanksthanks. Ciao!

  1. I enjoyed reading this. From the second line I instantly thought of a quote from Bruce Lee in the film Enter the Dragon, “Don’t think. FEEL. It’s like a finger pointing at the moon. Do not concentrate on the finger, or you will miss all of the heavenly glory”.
I like the engaging writing, particularly when you challenge the reader to caption the images, I shall have a go at the last one, “They told me the light would be enlightening, when I finally caught it, it was blinding”.
    Keep writing!
